    You´ve found a buyer and now your ready to complete the sale of your property. Read our tips and advice to avoid last minute problems.

  • Tips for Moving House

    Moving house is a big job and you will need to plan it out by making a list of all the things that you need to do and when they should be done by.

    Moving house checklist

    CLEAN UP about four to five weeks before move

    • have a cleanup
    • sell/give away unwanted items
    • start running down food items
    • keep a list of the addresses on incoming mail
    • prepare an inventory of everything
    • plan your move
    • advise doctor, dentist, and so on
    • book travel arrangements
    • organize a farewell

    START PACKING about two to three weeks before move

    • plan how and when to pack things
    • use larger boxes for lighter objects like towels and sheets
    • get labels to identify boxes, have a list with numbers so to keep control, etc
    • wash soiled clothes and so on, before packing
    • use small boxes for heavy or fragile items such as books or glassware
    • keep essential items not to be packed, separately
    • get sealing tape
    • mark fragile boxes
    • separate items into those that can be packed now vs. those that can't be packed until later
    • wrap china and glass in white paper (newspaper smudges) and line boxes with bubble wrap
    • list items in each box in a notebook
    • get boxes and wrapping paper
    • ask friends to help on the moving day or get a professional removal company

    THE FINAL WEEK

    • arrange final accounts for services, in some cases do not cancel because the complications it brings on the new buyer. Simply cancel any bank standing order and sign the documents for titularity of the accounts
    • arrange redirection of mail
    • confirm removal lists arrangements
    • confirm house sale/purchase details
    • return library books/borrowed items
    • pick up lay-bys, dry cleaning, repairs
    • cancel deliveries, like milk and newspapers
    • notify people about your change of address and arrange redirection through your Post office
    • arrange connection of services, like phone and electricity, at new house

    CLEAN UP last days

    • clean and defrost fridge
    • pack refrigerated foods into an ice box
    • empty water beds
    • have final clean up and throw out
    • get rid of flammables
    • start to pack things you are carrying
    • confirm the time with friends who are helping
    • prepare special equipment for packing - for example stereo, washing machine, according to manufacturers' instructions
    • keep medication and important documents safe, separate and accessible
    • borrow extra cleaning equipment from a friend or relative or get a cleaning service around

    MOVING last day

    • pack your car first, and keep it locked
    • check and clean rooms as cleared
    • return borrowed items like cleaning equipment
    • throw out or give away left-over food
    • check nothing has been left behind, like pets and keys
    • read meters, for example water, electricity and gas
    • sort out which keys to take and which to leave. Do not forget remote controls
    • be well rested - remember to take regular rest breaks and drink plenty of fluid

    Telling people you have moved

    When you move, there are a number of people and organizations you will need to tell. This includes:

    Family and friends

    • family
    • close friends, associations, clubs, etc

    Services

    • local electricity authority - for disconnection/final reading and reconnection
    • phone company - for disconnection and reconnection
    • gas company - for disconnection/final reading and reconnection
    • pay TV service - (if applicable)
    • your Internet provider - (if applicable)
    • community services you receive such as home care, delivered meals, and so on
    • postal service

    Health

    • doctor and/or medical specialist
    • chemist - ask for your Pharmaceutical Card or Records
    • dentist
    • optometrist

    Finances

    • bank, building society or credit union - for all your accounts
    • credit card agencies - for all your credit cards
    • superannuation company
    • investment or income sources - for example, Friendly Societies, Managed Funds, Bonds
    • stockbroker/financial adviser
    • insurance agent/company - insurance for car, house and contents, life, and so on
    • leasing or rental companies - for example, if you are paying off the car, TV or white goods

    Government agencies

    • You may need to contact some or all of these government agencies:
    • Inland Tax Revenue, Tax Authorities
    • Social Security 
    • Town Hall registrations 
    • foreign pension provider - if you are receiving a pension from overseas

    Car

    • road traffic authority for driver's license and car registration
    • automobile club - for example, the RACE, AAC

    Pets

    • the vet - to transfer your pet's records to a new vet
    • pet registration authority - in some countries and provinces, national or local authorities require pets to be micro-chipped, as well as licensed 

    Shops, clubs and hobbies

    • shops where you have an account
    • subscriptions to magazines
    • library
    • club memberships
